In response to a lack of rapid, safe, and affordable rooms, in late 2017, we opened a transitional apartment that has successfully housed 9 formerly homeless females ages 18-24. In addition, we manage a host home program which matches clients with individual homeowners who offer clients youth a safe place to stay for a predetermined period. We help all clients develop a viable list of temporary housing options and facilitate contact. If there are no viable short-term options, we place them in emergency shelters, host homes, help with room rentals, or place them in our transitional housing apartment. If employed, we help them identify and negotiate a safe room rental. In partnership with local housing authorities, we provide case management to young adults in high school so they are able to access housing subsidies. Once our clients are stably housed, we help them procure the supplies and furniture they need to start their life in their new living quarters. Ultimately, we work with our clients on building financial competence, appropriate savings goals, and budgets.
Our current and most exciting long-term endeavor thus far – Catalyst Housing is a supportive affordable housing project for extremely low-income young adults who lack access to secure housing. Once completed, Catalyst Housing will offer 24 studio apartments for extremely low-income 18-24 year olds. In addition to providing secure, sustainable, and affordable permanent housing, our ultimate goal with this project is to provide opportunities where residents can be supported and empowered to achieve their potential by the many wrap-around services we offer. We have worked with many constituents in the past year to ensure Catalyst Housing is an achievable and worthwhile next step for us as an organization.
